Boogers

I love the term “booger art”. It’s been used to affectionately describe some of the untrained outsider art from the early days of Dungeons & Dragons; Art that had more spirit than finesse, but feels instantly relatable.

It may be the most evocative fantasy art because so many of us covered our notebooks with drawings like these when we were young. We see it, and we’re immediately transported back to those early days when the game felt most vivid. In fact, a hallmark of my favorite fantasy artists is their ability to preserve that child-like kernel so that it shines through their professional executions.

Of all the art I’ve created since I started drawing for the hobby, some of my absolute favorites have been drawings that were done right on top of someone else’s art. I just add lines to the execution, and the kernel of their imagination shines through.

I’m working out how to offer this to you as a service in my Patreon tiering, but for now, please enjoy these examples of transformation:
